Anaerobic Adhesives Help Fasteners and Interference Fits Endure Punishment of Extreme Sports

New Henkel Video: How Loctite Threadlockers and Retaining Compounds Enhance Polaris Snowmobile Durability

A new video from Henkel Corporation goes inside the Polaris manufacturing facility to show how the company is using Loctite anaerobic threadlockers and retaining compounds to enhance the durability of its snowmobiles. In the video engineers from Polaris explain why they trust Loctite anaerobics and discuss specific applications where the adhesives are used. Polaris sleds are the choice of competitive snocross racers and X Games athletes because they are built to endure the punishment of full-out driving maneuvers, high loads and even crashes.

Polaris engineers explain in the video that their sleds must function safely and reliably under severe conditions and never fail under stress or at high operating temperatures. These machines must endure wide temperature fluctuations, hard landings, vibration and extreme impacts. The video shows that there are two main types of Loctite anaerobic adhesives used on the sleds. Threadlockers secure all threaded fasteners throughout the machine, eliminating the possibility of vibrational loosening. Retaining compounds reduce the dimensional precision required for interference fits, enabling engineers to design robust, lightweight joints at reduced cost and in less time. The video illustrates many of the actual applications for these two technologies.

In addition to Polaris engineers, the video interviews professional snocross racer and freestyle rider Levi LaVallee, who has earned nine Winter X Games medals including six golds, and who holds the world record for the 412.5-foot distance jump achieved on his snowmobile in 2010. LaVallee discusses both the reliability of Polaris sleds and the power of Loctite adhesives in preventing equipment failure.
